Just as a painter uses brushes to create art on canvas, makeup brushes are must-use tools to utilize when painting your face. Since the options and ways to use them can be overwhelming, here are five of my best brush tricks to keep in mind.
1. Wash Your Brushes
It is imperative you wash your makeup brushes at least once a week. Brushes are meant to be a long-term investment and washing them preserves the hair and shape, and also removes excess makeup to keep the bristles hygienic. Use liquid soap or shampoo, massage and rinse until the water runs clear.
Expert Tip: Brushes feeling a little dry and stiff? Rub a small amount of olive oil through the bristles before cleaning. This softens the hair and brings the texture back to life.
2. Blend, Blend, Blend (And When in Doubt, Blend Some More!)
The most important secret to keep in mind when using brushes is always focus on blending. You can take the darkest shadow and turn it into a seamless smoky eye if you blend well enough. The key is using small strokes in a circular motion, until you get your desired look.
3. Quality vs. Quantity
You don’t need a huge assortment of brushes for everyday use. The key brushes to have in your collection are foundation, blush/powder, bronzer, and two eyeshadow brushes one for application and one for contouring.
4. Liquids Deserve Brushes Too
Think brushes are reserved for powder-based product? Think again. Liquid and cream blushes should be applied with a blush brush, just like powder blushes, to achieve an even blend. Take a small amount of liquid blush and apply on your hand, gather with a blush brush, and apply to the apples of the cheeks until the color is even. I like working with the Yves Saint Laurent Powder Brush.
5. Double Dipping: Foundation and Concealer
To save an extra step, your foundation brush can also double as a concealer brush. Just remember to always apply concealer after foundation to get the perfect finish. If you’re in the market for a new foundation brush, I like the Giorgio Armani Blender Brush.
